Chapter Nine

“ALL I CAN tell you, Peter, is that right now I don't know which way is up or down or if I can trust anybody but you. So far, everybody that I have approached about this has either tried to quarantine me or kill me outright. This is not exactly a problem that is going to be easily fixed.”

“You have to give me a little bit of time to think, because right now my mind is going everywhere at once. It was... a little shocking to see you attack those two men with such venom in your eyes and it looked like you didn't even have any compunction about killing them at all. I know you tell me that this is part of the process but if that is the way it's supposed to be, then I have to wonder just how much worse this can get for you and me.”

“I know that I have laid a lot on your shoulders and I don't think it's fair to involve you in any of this. However, you did save my life, and you did ask. I feel that I owed you the courtesy of telling you exactly what you were getting yourself into.”

“Are you sure that you don't know how you got it in the first place? I mean something like that should be very memorable... but you tell me that you have no recollection of how it happened.”

“They told me that I was injected but I honestly don't remember any sort of pain or someone coming after me with a needle. I've wracked my brain and I still just can't figure out where and when it happened. If I could do that, I might be able to track down the person responsible and make them give me what I need to survive. So far, I have hit nothing but roadblocks and everyone in authority has been less than useless. I'm really trying to help you with this, but I can't tell you something that I don't know.”

“I might be able to help you with that. My sister is a police psychologist and she might be able to bring all those memories out. It's just that I'm not sure if I want to get her or anybody I know involved in any of this."

He looked at me before continuing. "I don't think we have a choice. We need to know how you contracted this, and the best way to do that is to dig into that brain of yours.” I thought for sure that he was going to run for the hills but he was stronger than I gave him credit for.

“We better hurry, because according to the timetable, we have less than forty-eight hours to make any sense out of this before I have to be eliminated for good. I don't have to tell you what will happen after those forty-eight hours and how I would become contagious to everybody around me at the time. Until then, I feel like I am just a walking corpse waiting to be put into my coffin and then into the ground.
